The interesting part for me was one particular brand he talked about that had a regular and deluxe version. The deluxe box was more expensive, but both versions were completely identical except for two things. The first is the word "deluxe" on the front. The second is one line in the directions. In the deluxe version they instruct you to add twice as much butter.
I told my boss this story and he immediately said back, "That's legal."
He then told me he used to work for a Danish paint thinner company that sold three grades of paint thinner, from low to best. All of it came from the same barrels. The best quality container was for France because of some obscure law that said they could only import best quality paint thinner. When he asked his bosses about selling the same thing as different products they couldn't believe how naive he was.
They said, "Everybody does it."
I thought those were both interesting distinctions.
