Jerry Lewis wrote a self-help book?

He certainly did. It's actually more like one of those Peanuts "Happiness is a Warm Puppy" books from the 70s. And I know, you don't like Jerry. I think he's a vastly underrated director and a fascinating (disturbing, crazy, random) human being with the perfect mix of old-time showbiz self-importance and actual accomplishments to justify it. So, I buy things like the self-help book he wrote.

It's called, "instruction book for... "being a person" or (just feeling better)". That's the actual puncuation. Some of the pages contain just a single word, most of them only part of a sentence. Opposite the words is cool sketch illustrating his point.

In the brief introduction, Jerry says that he wrote the book in response to his frustration at the backbiting going on amongst the crew during the filming of The Nutty Professor.

I wanted to share some of the text with you. This is first bit is from two pages.

The first illustration is a guy on crutches, frowning and smoking a cigarette. The second illustration, he's running around, smiling, holding his crutches up in the air. The text is:

SMILE AT CRIPPLES...
CRIPPLES WON'T BE AS
CRIPPLED IF YOU DO.

And some classic Jerry logic that is spread over four pages:

...AND FROM TRYING COMES
GETTING, AND FROM GETTING
COMES MORE GIVING AND FROM
GIVING COMES TAKING.
NOW IF EVERYONE WOULD JUST
GIVE AND TAKE... THE WORLD
WOULD BECOME EVEN, STEADY.
AND MORE AND MORE STABLE...
WHO WANTS TO LIVE IN A STABLE??

I WOULD IF I COULD DO ALL THESE THINGS.
IF I COULDN'T...
I'M LIVING IN ONE ANYWAY!

The illustrations are more than half the content of the book, but no illustrator is listed. He's just mentioned in passing in the introduction when Jerry says that he turned the manuscript (which he says only took him two hours to write) over to "his sketch artist".

This book will no doubt make my life at least ten times better. Thank you Jerry Lewis!
