This guy had a favorite conversation that he liked to impose on his co-workers. He didn't think Hitler was evil or a mastermind, his theory was that the Nazi party had bribed an otherwise innocent Hitler into leading them by bribing him with castles.
The line, as it was told to me, was, "You know, they bribed Hitler with castles. Who wouldn't do just about anything for the free use of castles?"
They bribed Hitler with castles.
I guess he would mention this theory during any awkward lull in conversation at the construction site. It's a perfect line for a socially backward semi-intellectual to get attention and become the center of attention.
I used to work with a guy that told me that he had a simple mathematical formula that would determine whether or not a war was ethical. I wish I could remember it. And, another guy I know from walking Roscoe that twists every conversation to be about how all women care about is money.
For some people, I think the best social contact they can hope for is an argument, so they just have a few zingers ready to go.
What a waste of time.
Still, there is something poetic in the phrase, "They bribed Hitler with castles."
