I really enjoyed it. The humor was dark and there were many nice touches. I thought Depp was fantastic. It's not Gene Wilder, but he would have been stupid to duplicate that performance. All the acting was spot on.
I had a few problems with it, but they didn't keep me from enjoying it. The biggest bad thing was...
... the movie ended not with a big bang, but with Wonka reconciling with his dentist father. What the hell is that about?
I mean there is good stuff in the scene, but since when is the story about Willy Wonka coming to terms with his childhood? It's some psycho-pop Joseph Campbell bullshit framing device crammed around what, in the novel, is already a great strong story.
Strong enough that it can withstand that kind of tinkering and survive.
It really made the movie run out of steam when you realized where it was headed.
Oh, and the CGI was mediocre. And so were the songs. I had high hopes for the songs. The visuals during the songs were great.
